About Us

Stories of Data is dedicated to advancing the study of data science through educational activities and competitions. We provide a platform for pre-college students to immerse themselves and gain a deeper appreciation of this field through exploring and creating their own video stories using data insights.

The website hosts a gallery for students to view and create their own video stories. Bi-annual competitions are held for students to submit their video stories and compete for $3000 worth of prizes.

Despite the growing importance of data science in our world, many students do not fully understand the possibilities and limits of the field. The organization aims to create a STEM passion within the future generation of our world. We want to not just encourage data analysis, but also foster discovery and collaboration between students, kindling an ardor for numbers. We believe that data science is for, not against, humanity, and that our efforts will help students gain the knowledge necessary to wield the powerful tools data science provides in bettering our world.

Stories of Data is unique in the format of our competitions. Unlike other science fairs/competitions where students simply talk about what they did, Stories of Data encourages students to tell a story with the data. Behind every data point is a number to analyze, an insight to discover, a story to tell. We encourage creativity among our participants, allowing them to fully understand data science, which has the capability of changing the world, for the better. We reach middle school and high school students with the opportunity of presenting their STEM interests in a unique way. The goal of our competitions is to inspire the next generation of students.

We use the term "video stories" to refer to what the analysis of data points should craft, stories. The trends and insights discovered through statistics, artificial intelligence, and mathematics form captivating stories that allow us to learn from the past and create the future. Though video stories may look like scientific research presentations as seen in science fairs or conferences, they may also not look like anything we've seen before; we encourage creativity.
